In 1941, brothers Bill & Leo Hoen bought 100 acres of land along Airport Highway (between Pilliod Rd. & Holloway Rd.) in Holland, Ohio. They started growing wheat, soybean, field corn and produce, but as years passed they turned more towards growing vegetables. In the 1950's they were growing up to 30 acres of processing tomatoes which they employed migrant workers to harvest. The tomatoes were then sold to the Heinz Tomato Factory for ketchup. By the 1960's they were still growing vegetables and continued to add more varieties of produce.
They decided to sow their own seeds into flats for field planting. So in 1962 the very first Greenhouse was built. By the mid 60's, Bill and Leo were selling wagon loads of produce along Airport Hwy. and continuing to add more Greenhouses. The growth was rapid and in the early 70's they had about a full acre of Greenhouses while continuing to grow about 50 acres of vegetables. At this time they decided to expand into fruit orchards as well. They started planting apple trees and within 5 years they had 8 acres of apples and 2 acres of peaches and nectarines. Another addition in the early 70's were strawberries. By 1975 they had up to 7 acres of strawberries, most of which were eagerly picked by the public.
As the demand for quality home grown produce and fruit continued to grow, so did the idea to build a Produce Market. In 1975 the Market was built to sell the fruits and vegetables with Bill & Leo’s families both being involved in the entire Farm. In 1980, Bill & Leo decided to split the business. Bill took over the Produce Market and Leo took over the Greenhouse business.
Leo and his son Bob both started growing flowers in flats for the Greenhouse. In 1983 another acre of Greenhouses was built, with a retail store being added, and Hoen’s Greenhouse Inc. was formed. Today, Bob and his wife Theresa own and operate the 20 acre farm and business. They have 6 children together, many which are involved in the business: Ryan and his wife Heather, Justin and his wife Heather, Jacob and his wife Rebekah, Stephanie and her husband Brandon, Ian and Caleb. Bob and Theresa are also very proud grandparents of Mikayla, Landon, Wesley and Emery Hoen.
